INSEAD, the international business school, and UBS, a global leader in philanthropy advisory services, recently published a report on Family Philanthropy in Asia. Knowledge Platform, a Singapore-based knowledge solutions company, provided the research support relating to this seminal report on philanthropy across Asia.
The groundbreaking report provides an overview of family philanthropy in China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand. The report focuses on three substantive areas on a comparative, pan-Asian basis: family motivations and dynamics; the areas of focus of family philanthropy; and the institutionalization of family philanthropy.
The report draws on quantitative surveys from over 200 high net worth families and individuals, as well as over 100 qualitative interviews. By gathering a substantial sample of numerical data, as well as in-depth descriptions of how families are systematizing their philanthropic efforts, the report provides a collection of statistics, best practices and case studies for the growing ranks of newly-wealthy Asians interested in giving back to their communities and more broadly.
The report has been well received by media outlets and professionals involved in the sector, who acknowledged that the report helps bring clarity to an area that has traditionally been opaque. While dynamic economic growth in the region is evident, it has been difficult to make definitive conclusions on how it has affected philanthropic giving.
To meet this challenge, a team of more than 20 researchers, analysts and editors from INSEAD, UBS, Knowledge Platform and 5 local outsourcing companies collaborated to detail the state of family philanthropy in the targeted countries. The wide geographical scope and quantity of data gathered has contributed to the clear picture of Asian philanthropy presented in the report.
Mahboob Mahmood, the CEO of Knowledge Platform, who led the research effort notes: “We are very proud of our contributions to this seminal report. We deployed a substantial internal team that conducted research in Bahasa, English, Hindi, Japanese and Mandarin, managed five outsourcing relationships, deployed an online survey platform, conducted significant desktop and interview-based research, undertook statistical analysis and organized and summarized a mass of information from multiple sources and multiple languages. Effective research and learning relating to the rapidly changing and largely under-researched dynamics of the Asian continent require multi-format, and multi-language solutions.”
